Essence of Nadi Jyotiṣa, Relation with Ayurveda - Human Breath, Pranayama and Swara Shastra

Ever wondered how the energy of planets interact with us? How planetary influence enters our body-mind-soul system?

Lot of people think we receive direct rays from each planet in the cosmic energy field. The fact however is that we breathe the combined cosmic energy of planets 24 X 7.

Ayurveda, Jyotiṣa and Human Breath

The changes in planetary positions alter the properties of the cosmic energy which gets reflected in our system when we inhale.

It's a well known fact that our breathing and pulse rate go hand-in-hand. Nadi Jyotiṣa is about study of planetary influence on our breathing.

The affect of same planetary position varies in different people. This happens because each one of us has differentiated individual consciousness and thereby our nervous system functions differently. This is the most fundamental point - there are more layers to it.

Nadi Jyotiṣa is not about planets but about human life.
There are 30 degrees in one raṣi (sign).
1 degree = 60 angular minutes
That means one raṣi has 30 X 60 = 1800 minutes.
There are 12 raṣis so there are total 12 X 1800 = 21,600 minutes in 360 degree zodiac.

This 21,600 is the number of breaths a healthy human takes per day. This is mentioned in Ayurveda and also in accordance with modern science. We breathe the energy altered by the cosmic planets in signs.

The meaning of 'one breath' is one cycle of inhale, exhale and any pause. They work like the crest and trough of a wave.

Breathing is connected with our pulse - the fundamental of living.

In a day, each of the 12 signs become ascendant or lagna, cycling through one day of our breath. Every raṣi (sign), it's degrees and 5 elements or tattva in each degree give a specific rhythm to the cosmic energy and thereby our breathing rate.

The word 'nadi' in ayurveda is spelt differently than how's it's done in 'nadi jyotiṣa' in Indian languages.

Nadi in Jyotiṣa represents the karmic cause embedded in cosmic energy whereas 'nadi' in ayurveda is the perceptible effect of that energy in individual mental, physical and spiritual health.

In Ayurveda, an expert focuses on the pulse called naadi. In Nadi Jyotiṣa, an expert focuses on the pulse of cosmos. One is inner pulse, the other is outer pulse. Together they constitute our living experience.

There is a reason breathing is the core of being human. The ancient science of breathing - swar ṣastra is NOT considered outside the scope of Jyotiṣa.

Personally, I have tried to follow the cosmic swara or breathing vibration since almost a decade in my daily routine.

Yogic practices like pranayama were conceived to address all problems of human life at a fundamental level. It's not just about physical health which is only one of the many symptoms of misalignment with cosmic rhythm.
