The 4^th House: Happiness and Moksha Trine 4-8-12

4^th house is called sukha (सुख) bhava or house of happiness. It signifies one's real estate (house), vehicles, luxuries and emotional bonds, so obviously it must be house of happiness.

That begs a fundamental question

4^th house contradiction between materialism and spirituality

If it's so much about happiness then why is it part of the 4^th-8^th-12^th house mokṣa (मोक्ष) trine? What's the spiritual connection of cars, house, land, luxuries ? Why 4^th house is trapped between two big secret spiritual "daddies" - 8^th house and 12^th house in mokṣa (मोक्ष) trine ?

When Material Happiness Creates an Imbalance

• If we pay attention, all the good stuff in 4^th house is of material nature — including the emotional attachments.
• When the idea of happiness is driven by material reality, it is creating an imbalance between energy and matter.
• In all probability that puts 4^th house on a collision course with the energy-dominated houses — the 8^th and 12^th.
• The more one misunderstands material happiness of 4^th house as real happiness, the divergence between energy and matter is more.
• That is how activation of 8^th house becomes more:
  • drastic,
  • forceful,
  • dramatic
  • or shocking.
• After all, 8^th house is 5^th as counted from 4^th house — which means "future".
• 5^th house from any house shows its future in this existence (janma) itself.
• This clearly indicates the future of too much material attachment of 4^th house is building the momentum in the background for the force with which 8^th house might set the balance right.

The balancing act between 8^th house and 4^th house

The 4^th–8^th House Seesaw: Equal and Opposite

This force follows the nature's law of equal and opposite - Newtonian laws are only mechanical but this is the root of all such mechanical i.e. "scientific" laws.

That is why 4^th-8^th-12^th are balancing the matter and energies between past, present and the future.

Attachment in the 4^th, Detachment through the 8^th

One bonds with house, vehicles, luxuries and friends in 4^th house, 8^th house enforces the detachments from them.

4^th house uses creates matter from energy, to give happiness, 8^th house transforms that matter back to energy to deliver anguish. Equal and opposite.

Nurture and preserve what one loves	Transform or dissolve what can no longer remain the same
Find happiness through possession and proximity	Learn detachment through loss, distance or change
Strengthen the feeling of "this is mine"	Reveal that "nothing is permanently mine"
Give the heart something to hold	Teach the heart to let go
Create personal emotional identity	Dissolve old emotional patterns through deep transformation
Remain attached to the known world	Take us beneath the known into the hidden world
Bondage through comfort	Liberation through detachment

The 4^th house creates the emotional and material bond; the 8^th house brings the experiences that test, transform or dissolve that bond.

Why Does the 8^th House Release the Energy of the 4^th?

8^th house releases the energy form 4^th house because it had to create the 4^th house matter in the future - don't forget 8^th house is 4^th from the 5^th (future). Where will the creative energy for 4^th house real estate, vehicle., luxuries come from? Energy is constant.. unless it's released from one material, another one can't be physically created.

So 8^th house snatches the material attachements of this existance (janma) to create the matter, that house and car for the future existence (janma).

The Forgotten Cycle of Past, Present and Future Janma

• It's funny our monkey mind in it's deep 4^th house attachments forgot that:
  • the 4^th house of this existence (janma) was the 8^th house of the past existence,
  • which is the 9^th house.
• The "happiness" of 4^th house was given in this birth by snatching or transforming something material in our past!
• What might have inflicted anguish in past existence (janma), crystallized the energy into:
  • the house,
  • the car,
  • and luxuries
  of 4^th in this existence (janma)!
• The sense of protection, safety, convenience and "feel good" felt:
  • inside a house,
  • inside a car,
  • or in company of loved ones
  is shown the reality by exposing to the uncertainties, risks and scare of the unknown (8^th house).
• 4^th house shows gravity towards the visible, while the 8^th house exposes the weightless repulsion of the invisible.
• When 4^th house significations are taken away in this birth, the mind is:
  • grieved,
  • shocked,
  • scared,
  • surprised,
  • stressed
  • or embarrassed.

Why Must the 4^th House Eventually Give Way?

I was asked by a student - "But why 4^th house has to be met with such a seemingly sad reality? Why is it required at all?".

My answer was - 4^th house was standing on the way between 1st and 5^th house. 1st house is a temporary "present", being in physical form. 5^th house from ascendant is the future of soul progression. 4^th house is 12^th from 5^th hence pulling it "backwards" - it reduces the forward progression.

Anything that's manifested in physical form, has to eventually perish.

Mind and Atman: The Deeper Seesaw

This seesaw balance between sensory perception versus deeper layers of our energy is actually the tussle between mind vs atman (soul). Mind acts from perceptive reality, soul acts from inner path. If mind is not aligned with the soul, there is no way it can sustain very long.

Bonding with Bandhu (बन्धु), Friend, Loved Ones to Bondage, the Bandhan (बन्धन)

So the bonding in 4^th house is actually a bondage. This principle is beautifully wrapped in the word in classical text as bandhu (बन्धु) - someone who binds under attachment. So bandhu (बन्धु) is not just a friend here - it's deeply symbolic of any emotional bondage, the bandhan (बन्धन).

This 4^th house "bonding" is in fact a "bondage" at the core of it.

The 4^th–8^th–12^th Moksha Trine

A section of traditional astrologers in Southern India don't consider 4^th house as benefic house, in real sense - they look at the chart as treating the 4^th-8^th-12^th moksha trine as anti-matter enforcement in this existence.
