There's no chart analysis without understanding a blank chart even before planets step in.
Life in phenomenal world requires acting and reacting to imbalances and frictions. These imbalances and frictions create the conflicts which need to be resolved in daily lives.
Quadrant houses represent the regular push and pulls of our daily life matters. These matters rest on 4 pillars of manifestation - thought, feeling/emotions, desires and action respectively seen from 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th house (and their trines in extended manner).
Kendra or quadrant houses always fall in signs of different elements (tatva). For example, if your ascendant is in earth sign, 4th house will always be fire sign, 7th house water and 10th house air sign.
Different elements act like most fundamental and atomic quality that defines the nature of a planet or sign. When a sign of a particular element falls on a house which represent domains of life, it defines the playing field.
Obviously these signs have different, often conflicting orientation, objectives and modus operandi. They configure the 4 pillars of one's life to different and potential conflict zones, mutually.
Now here's the twist - fire and air elements are opposites but complementary and hence compatible with each other. Similarly earth and water elements are compatible.
One pair is incompatible (and hence potentially resistant) with the other pair of elements. For example, air helps fire spread, earth absorbs water easily. At energy level of existence, these elements of tatva are range of frequencies.
That's the reason 4th and 10th houses are always at loggerheads with 1st and 7th. Heart (4th house) mostly conflicts with brain (1st house), what you do in public life (10th house) is usually incompatible and conflicts with what you actually think (1st) and what you really want or do in personal relationship (7th house). It's a herculean task to reconcile all the 4 Kendra (quadrant) houses. Welcome to life shaped by the earthly manifestation of elements (tatva).
1st and 7th houses show the opposite and complementary area of life - we must balance them to have harmony and peace. Too much energy in 1st house, relationship (7th) gets deficient, too much focus on relationship, you lose sense of self (1st) and confidence.
4th and 10th being incompatible elemental natures create friction and conflicts. 4th house shows conflict with inner self whereas 10th house shows the same with outer. Too much focus on career dwarfs domestic life and vice-versa.
That's why the 4th aspect (called square aspect) is considered challenging, except Mars's 4th drishti. That's because the aspecting sign is operating from a sign of incompatible element.
As daily tussle in one's life is indicated by 4 Kendra (quadrant) houses, houses in trikona or trinal signs (5th and 9th) show the support or luck factor. Why? That's because all the 3 trinal signs have same elements. If your ascendant falls in water sign, 5th and 9th houses also fall in water signs.
Here's another twist - it's not just to be seen from ascendant but should definitely be applied from all houses. Every house in the chart has its specific challenges, opportunities and support system. That's why we must look at Kendra (quadrant) and trikona (trinal) from each house that we wish to study.
That's why it's expected that natural benefic planets are better in kendra (quadrant) houses - you want to resolve conflicts with an easy going person rather than a rowdy guy. Likewise, support and cooperation with a decent person is always better than that from a maverick or antisocial fellow, hence natural benefics are welcome at trikona (trinal) houses.
When planets sit at these houses, they gear up for the mutual imbalances, frictions and support by their positional aspects. This is the fundamental, first hand chart analysis that any Astrologer worth his/her salt can't afford to ignore.
If you ignore these elemental fundamentals, you are just not looking at ground realities but looking and talking in the air.
At the root of this daily tussle between our life pillars is the elemental compatibility and orientation.
Going deeper, one finds that it's all about variable speed of Earth's revolution in movable, fixed or dual signs that fuel these frictions at specific zones but that's topic for some other day.
